Emplosia
by Mik Seliverstov / allSynthpop.com 2006
In my opinion, when it comes to music Russia is a country of extremes. Flooded by the cheesiest pop music ever created (well, maybe except for the Asian pop), the country manages to breed outstanding alternative musicians who are instantly able to rival their most seasoned Western counterparts. Without a doubt Emplosia's self-titled debut on Q-Code Records is a serious contender in today's synthpop and electro scene.
Emplosia is a synthpop / electroclash duo of two Russian girls, Darja and Julia. The band was formed around 2000 in the Russian city of Saratov and has toured extensively ever since. This debut record represents the bands' best work for the past 5 years with addition of two remixes by two other Russian bands Inner Conflict and babyMax.

OK, I have to admit I have a soft spot for all-girl electroclash bands. Almost instantly Emplosia proudly took a place among my other favorites, such as Ladytron, Client, or Soho Dolls. Russia is often being overlooked as a source of quality synth music but bands like Emplosia should be able to turn over that attitude.

Though not breaking any new grounds the music of Emplosia is fresh and contemporary. Soft, analog synth type of sound reminds of early Depeche Mode or Kraftwerk, yet outstandingly thought-through production work makes it interesting to listen to and does not trigger any reference to the 80s music. Vocals sound especially live and vivid backed by the analog era synth sounds. Alternative enough to not be labeled just as another pop record it's not too experimental to be exclusive and should appeal to a broad audience of modern synthpop, electro, and electroclash fans. A mix of Russian and English lyrics gives it a touch of exotic, however the music is not essentially different from synthpop records made, say, in Germany or Sweden. No, their music is not utterly original or trend setting yet the band has managed to use proven synth and pop hooks without sounding cliché and to give the record its own unique sound.

I think if someone would ask me to characterize this record in one word I would say integrity. It just sounds as a solid piece of hard work without cutting corners or compromising on production quality. Even though, it may look like the album is loosing some of the momentum towards the end, it's an ear candy and a solid 5-star record for me. Honestly, I just can't quit listening to that CD. Few guys here are starting joking that I'm now more into these Russian girls than their music. Screw them, it's an amazing record and I recommend it to anyone who can get it.
